Hieronymus Bosch and 'The Garden of Earthly Delights'

Hieronymus Bosch and 'The Garden of Earthly Delights'
Posthumous portrait (detail) of Hieronymus Bosch, circa 1550 (attributed to Jacques Le Boucq.

This is the left panel of the triptych known as The Garden of Earthly Delights, this panel being The Garden of Eden, or Joining of Adam and Eve, and it can be interpreted a number of ways. You just know the forbidden fruit is next. The full triptych is here. Bosch painted this later in life, between 1490 and 1510, by which time he must have learned a thing or two.

Before the Fall there wasn't a lot to do but in a second panel (not shown here), everybody is having sex, which is why a third panel ("Hell") was required to set the record straight.
